chchoti - badi baat..

I haven't had the oppurtunity yet, to explore Hindi Literature all that much.
(A Parineeta or Madhushala don't really count)
Nonetheless, it remains one of the things that I sincerely hope to do in future.

Kabir's couplets are a part of my wish-to-read-thoroughly list.
Most of us have rattofied (learn them by heart) during school days to score those marks in Hindi.. then, I didn't know they'd make such a long lasting impression.

I find them simple yet profound and aptly applicable in daily life.. The most comfortable part is that they're open-ended and one can derive meanings and comprehend each couplet as they wish to.. There's no compulsion that they have to be spiritual or religious or anything similar.
However old the couplets may get, they will certainly never become ancient.
Sure says something about the man who's credited for them!

The one doha that has been frequenting my thoughts these days :

Bura jo dekhan main chala,
Bura na milya koi..
Jo mann khoja apna,

Toh mujhse bura na koi..

It's easy to look for fault in others and blame them... but when you search deep down, you realize there's hardly anyone worse..

55 'cutting' aur bol! :D:

:-)

My fav doha is
Aisi vani boliye, mann ka apa hoye,
apna mann sheetal kare, auro ko sukh hoye

:-)

and then the usual known-by-all
kal kare so aaj kal.........
:-D

Hindi is a beautiful language. and kabir sure is relevant.

Reading the bhagwat geeta tops my list.

Cheers!

oh btw, i know these coz I had opted for hindi till 12th. Yea, din score much, but din study much either!

hehe....

Now back to your comment ;)
Hmm.. I like that one as well but to be honest, I've never been a very polite individual! :D

kal kare so aaj kar toh just doesn't work for a procrastinator like me! :/

:)

Hindi till 12th??.. Child, how could you?? how did you??.. lol..

Jo bhi, hindi is beautiful! :)

Express said...

yea, freaky :-D
I can read ur mind :-D

yes, 12th! and scored kinda well...never studied, made up answers in exams.

Yes, my hindi is good :-P :-P

I believe in the other version of kal kare,
aaj kare so kal kar, kal kare so parso,
itni kya jaldi hai pyare, jab jeena hai barso!

;-)

God!! it is applicable to me NOW!

i jus dnt understand hw Kabir ever understood such simple truths and wrote them dwn in such wonderful verses!

Preeti said...

sad isnt it...that we have only rattofied kabir in school...

i remember my hindi teacher going on and on and on...

i realized very late in life that these dohas were actually very beautiful...

A PASSING THOUGHT

i can see a lot of cancerian females (including moi) aggregating here... is this the genesis of something...

Divya said...

nice :) i was always bad at hindi..never used to get the 'ka ke ki's right :( i still curse the subject for bringing down my 10th std marks :P whatever marks i used to score was thanks to the little sanskrit words i used which got through as the 'tatsam roop' words :P
obv, the only doha i still rem is the most common of all,

bada hua toh kya hua jaise ped khajoor
panthi ko chhaya nahi phal lage ati door.

of course, the doha was my only solace for every time i felt depressed about my not so bada height :D

Divya said...

btw, LOVED your blog title.. am a tea lover myself.. masala tea's my fav :)
and 'cutting chai'.. lol...very amusing term.. d'ya know how it originated in the first place by any chance? first heard it in aamchi mumbai (do they use the term in other parts of the country??)

Hi ,

I was reading ur blog posts and found some of them to be wow.. u write well.. Why don't you popularize it more.. ur posts on ur blog ‘Chai aur Gupshup’ took my particular attention as some of them are interesting topics of mine too; i agree with u folks though they are simple but very meaningful....

BTW I help out some ex-IIMA guys who with another batch mate run www.rambhai.com where you can post links to your most loved blog-posts. Rambhai was the chaiwala at IIMA and it is a site where users can themselves share links to blog posts etc and other can find and vote on them. The best make it to the homepage!

This way you can reach out to rambhai readers some of whom could become your ardent fans.. who knows.. :)

Cheers,

Hi,

My favourite like many other commenters out here is also :
Kaal kare so aaj kar
Aaj kare so ab
Pal mein parley hoyegi
Bahuri karega kab

And I am proud to say that I practice this to perfection. I don't postpone idling and doing nothing, unless unavoidable :-)

Cheers,
